JACKIE PERDUE SHOW NOTES!

Below are some of my favorite moments from the interview. Please note that some of the quotes were paraphrased from the interview. For the full interview make sure to listen to the podcast or watch the YouTube video.

The Beginning:

I started about four and a half years ago. The reason I started is because I was obsessed with watching so many makeup artists on YouTube and watching all these beauty videos but they were all professionals already. And I’m like, well I’m a beginner and I don’t really know much so why don’t I make a video showing my progress with makeup. I was mainly doing it for myself, I didn’t think anyone would watch and it grew into something so much bigger and thats what it is now.

My first makeup tutorial was my first time wearing makeup. I was a true true beginner.

It was embarrassing. I wasn’t used to seeing myself on YouTube or on a camera. I actually didn’t tell any of my friends or family, nobody knew. When I started getting viewers, these were people that I didn’t even know, they were actually watching me and then they started requesting videos and I was like oh my gosh, ok. I think when I got to 100 subscribers I told my friends and family.

Embracing your True Style on YouTube

I started trying to appeal to other people, dress like everyone else, act like everyone else. It became this habit that I didn’t realize that I was doing until only recently. I would realize that when I go to any YouTube event I would try to get all dressed up and pretty, I wouldn’t feel comfortable like that. I feel most comfortable when I am wearing very natural makeup, my hair is crazy and I am in very comfortable, laid back style and I realized that is my style, thats what I want  to be. I feel like my viewers were so supportive during this whole transiting in finding myself. So supportive and so sweet in encouraging me to embrace who I am. They are telling me that they are proud that I am embracing myself. That is the coolest thing ever that I am able to make them proud. I really hope that inspires other girls, especially young girls to be true to who they are and not worry about trying to impress everyone around them.

Beauty Bonus Round:

What are your three holy grail items:

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Powder

Benefit Push up Liner: I am totally loving that right now. Its one of those products you have to practice. I didn’t like it at first but now I love it.

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation: The best foundation I have ever tried I love it.

What is your best tip to increase subscriber rate and video views:

The best tip I can give if you want to help grow your subscribers and your channel is definitely network. If you can attend any of these events, I definitely recommend you do. Even if you can’t, try connecting through twitter and facebook and build relationships with people that can help your channel grow. I would recommend connecting via social media. It’s so powerful and it’s just continuing to grow. I think maybe try messaging YouTubers or people you can network with. The thing is, you want to contact someone who could obviously help your channel grow but you don’t want to contact someone who has a million more subscribers than you. Someone with that many subscribers might get too many emails. Try to find someone similar in your subscriber count or viewer count, maybe a little more or a little lower whatever it may be. Find someone similar to you and build with that and the more you grow you can work with bigger channels and so on and so forth.

Who is your beauty blogger inspiration?

I am so inspired by Bethany Mota. She is such a rockstar. I get so excited for her. I feel like in society when someone does good we try and bring them down. But, I get so excited when someone is doing good and someone is succeeding. I am definetely inspired by everything she is doing. Its groundbreaking and bringing opportunities for everyone on the internet, its amazing.

What is your favorite social media platform?

Tie between instagram and facebook. I love pictures and people are very visual, I love posting pictures, but I also like typing things too so I think facebook is great, you can also see who you are talking to as well. I use Twitter but not as much, definitely facebook and instagram,

What do you wish you knew when you first started your channel?

I wish I knew myself. I feel like I would have been able to do so much more instead of trying to do what everyone else is doing and do what people want to see. I wish I knew to be true to myself instead of trying to be someone I’m not and dress in a way I dont normally dressed.

What is the piece of advice you would give someone who is new to YouTube?

Being true to who you are. I think a lot of times I see people trying to start channels. Obviously they’re new and don’t know where to begin so they try to  mimic other youtubers. The thing is viewers are really smart and they are going to be able to see through you so easily. If you are not being true to you they will be able to tell and they will not be nice about it. Another thing is to have thick skin. It’s such a nasty world sometimes and people will leave the meanest comments and it will really break you down. I have really thick skin but even then every now and then it kind of hurts, all those mean comments. No matter how sweet or nice you are or how perfect you are people will leave those nasty comments, so be prepared for that. Like I said no matter who you are or how nice you are, they are going to give you the meanest comments.
