What inspired you to get onto YouTube?

When I was in school and we did a career seminar, they were talking about things you could do after you graduate. That was when I started watching youtube videos. I began to realize there was way more to youtube than makeup and you can have fun with it.

Tell me about your first few videos:

I was so awkward and nervous when I first started filming. I had to reteach myself everything. I was using a handheld video camera. The quality wasn’t its best, but it still did its job. I taught myself and experimented with different video and editing techniques. The very first videos I did once a month. I wasn’t doing it too often. When I got into it, five months later, I was uploading every other day. I was doing it a lot more then than I was doing it now actually. I was passionate about YouTube and my boyfriend encouraged and motivated me to upload more and dive into it. He saw potential in me and knew that I could go further with it. I started doing more lifestyle videos. I would try and change up doing more makeup and fashion and routine type videos. I don’t always want to do the same thing on my channel. I ventured out and did different things. I always like to see different things from different channels, it keeps you interested. I always listen to my viewers. Without them we wouldn’t be anywhere.

NYX Face Awards

I did the NYX face dace awards two years ago. That’s when I saw my channel take off. I was getting more subscribers more quickly than I did before. Around then was when I was started seeing the difference. I had about 5k subscribers when I entered the contest. After the awards, I probably gained 20k subscribers. It wasn’t really quickly that it happened, it happened over a couple of months. It happened way faster than it had been than in the previous months. I had watched the NYX face awards the first year it was on. Charismastar inspired me to actually enter the contest. It looked so much fun. Throughout the actual contest you get sent huge boxes of makeup, they are a very generous company. You figure out what you want to do based on the theme of each challenge.  It gave me more confidence in YouTube. I saw people who were supportive of me and wanting to see more videos. I decided at that time it was something I wanted to continue doing. After the NYX face awards, I got more creative with my videos. My channel got a bit better quality because I was investing in better equipment and lighting, I started editing in final cut pro after that.

What types of videos get the most views?

I found that the types of videos that got most views were get ready with me videos so I could still do my makeup, they could see that and the lifestyle element so it’s a little more personal. Routine videos where they see what I do on a day to day basis. People like to be personal and see a little bit into other people’s lives. Those videos got a lot of success on my channel. Routine videos are huge. I did a lot of morning routines and I’ve been seeing clubbing routines lately. Things people do to prepare for going out. Travel routines, anything that relates to makeup and lifestyle and what people are doing. People feel closer to you when you do these videos.

How do you use instagram and Twitter for your channel.

I do not use it as a promotion for my channel. I find a lot of people don’t really care about my pictures if I say, look at this video I just uploaded. I use it more as a way to talk to my followers and show them what Im doing. I use it to contact subscribers and talk to them.

What is the best opportunity received as a result of being on YouTube?

The NYX face awards was an incredible opportunity. You get to meet at lot of people. Going to different events. Beautycon was crazy to go to. Being able to meet other people and being invited to all these fun events. I’ve only started just recently going to events. We did one with London Drugs recently. I would not have been invited to it if it weren’t for YouTube. Another event was for the Vancouver international film festival. We got invited to that.

What is your goal for YouTube?

I would love it to be my full time career and not have to do anything else. Also, I would love to establish that true relationship with my subscribers. I would love to have a strong presence on YouTube. Now, because so many people have grown so quickly on YouTube, a long time ago, 100k YouTube subscribers seemed like the craziest thing in the world. Now that there are so many people out there that have a million subscribers, it seems like its not as big of a deal to some people. It’s hard to get the same relationship if you don’t have those people following you and wanting you.
